Macao's distinctive blend of cultures is a source of pride for the Special Administrative Region. Back in July 2005,“The Historic Centre of Macau” made the list of UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage Sites, the 31st for the People's Republic of China. This international recognition has raised community awareness and fostered local people's appreciation of heritage values.

Wang Yijun, lecturer in Heritage of Macau Institute for Tourism Studies, said, "None of the heritage works of architecture in the Historic Center of Macau will ever die. They are alive. They remind people of what represents the unique Macao culture and that Macao was one of the earliest windows of China to the outside world. So they were witnesses to what has been happening over hundreds of years."

Wang Yijun said, "We enjoy an atmosphere of cultural plurality. Much evidence proves that Many residents understand Mandarin, Cantonese and Portuguese and English. We have different styles of architecture and cuisine of various schools. Many people have both western and Chinese lifestyles and customs."
