Possible amnesty for coup plotters in Honduras

2009-12-16 14:01 BJT

The President-elect of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, has held a meeting with representatives of political parties at the country's National Congress in Tegucigalpa.

They discussed the possibility of granting amnesty for those involved in the coup that ousted president Manuel Zelaya.

On Tuesday, Lobo said the move could be a way of bringing peace and unity to the nation, but insisted that it would only cover political acts, not common crimes.

The president of the Honduran Congress, Jose Alfredo Saavedra, who voted to depose Manuel Zelaya, said it was essential to open a national debate on the possibility of offering amnesty.

Many in the international community have echoed the calls, saying it's the only option for Honduras to end its political standoff.
