Animals have also been left reeling by the cold. Frigid sea temperatures off the southeastern US state of Florida have brought hundreds of loggerhead sea turtles ashore.

NASA scientists teamed up with conservation workers on Friday to bring in as many sea turtles as possible from the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge located at the Kennedy Space Center.

The animals were measured, weighed and treated for medical problems.

They were then relocated to warmer inland facilities to wait out the cold temperatures. Still in Florida, an orangutan at Miami Metrozoo donned a blanket to keep warm from the cold.

Meanwhile, a famous Minnesota landmark has come to a freezing halt. The Minnehaha Falls, a popular tourist destination in the area, have frozen over.
