Northern China expecting more snow

2010-02-07 14:21 BJT

Most areas of northern China can expect more snow as the temperature drops in the next few days. For southern parts of the country rain is in the forecast.

The first Spring snow began to fall on Beijing Saturday evening, but had stopped Sunday morning. It had little impact on the city's weekend road traffic.

At the Beijing International Airport, as of 11 a-m Beijing time Sunday, a total of 195 flights have been delayed due to the snowfall. To ensure travel safety, the airport has taken quick response measures.

Till present, all the three runways were cleared and the flight service is gradually returning to normal. The national weather observatory says snow and sleet will hit many northern areas of China in the next three days.

The Ili River Valley in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region can expect heavy snow.

Parts of southern China will see freezing rain for Thursday and Friday. The temperature in most parts of China will drop six to eight degrees Celsius.

The cold snap could add more pressure to the travel rush during the Spring Festival.
