Yanukovich beat PM Tymoshenko in Ukrainian presidential runoff

2010-02-09 15:21 BJT

With nearly 99 percent of the votes counted, Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich is sure to be the winner of Sunday's presidential runoff.

The country's Central Election Committee says Yanukovich beat Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by a small margin. Tymoshenko is due to give a news conference today.

Ukraine is waiting for her contest to the result, or accept defeat and shake hands with the winner. She had earlier hinted that she would stage a replay of the Orange Revolution, if the election was found to have been rigged in favor of Yanukovich. Tymoshenko has yet to make a statement. The Interior Ministry said on Monday that there has been no threat to public order, and large-scale unrest is unlikely at the moment.
