Haiti reconstruction cost may near US$14b

2010-02-17 14:22 BJT

US$14b, that's how much the Inter-American Development Bank estimates it will take to rebuild Haiti. The earthquake will likely be the most costly natural disaster in modern times.

The bank study says the Haitian quake is especially destructive when viewed in relation to the country's population of nearly 10 million. The bank says the reconstruction tends to focus on trying to replace things that were there, and to build back better infrastructure and more advanced buildings.

It stresses that coordination is key, and says reconstruction may take years to complete.
