Venezuela offer post to former president Zelaya

2010-03-07 14:19 BJT

The former president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, has been invited by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to head an energy consortium. Zelaya has accepted the invitation.

Petrocaribe is a consortium which allows poorer Caribbean and Central American countries to buy oil from Venezuela, on preferential terms. Zelaya praised Chavez's positive impact on the solidarity of Central America countries.

The ousted president said his new job would "strengthen the democratic process" in Latin America, but he gave no further details about the role. The two men have been political allies since before Zelaya was removed from office last June.
