A 7.1-magnitude earthquake has hit northwest China's Qinghai Province, killing at least 67 persons and injuring many others.

The quake struck Yushu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu at 7:49 local time on this morning.

The epicenter is 30 kilometers from the Jiegu Township, the government seat of the Yushu prefecture, and 800 kilometers from the provincial capital Xining. Telecommunications were temporarily cut, but have been restored. Two rescue teams from Qinghai and Tibet have been dispatched. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 4.7-magnitude had jolted the county at a depth of about 6 kilometers two hours before.
