NBA franchise the Washington Wizards are marking the anniversary of a major moment for sports in China. Members of the NBA squad are making a return visit to China to commemorate the team's tour three decades ago. Former and current players showed up in Shanghai.
NBA Hall of Famer Wes Unseld accompanied retired big man Gheorghe Muresan, and current player Caron Butler held a basketball clinic at a Shanghai high school on Monday. The 1979 visit happened as part of a celebration of diplomatic ties between Washington and Beijing that year. That team, known then as the Bullets and led by Unseld, played exhibition games against the Chinese national team. Thirty years later, the team returned to trace their memories of the milestone tour.
NBA legend Wes Unseld said, "It was a tremendous opportunity and experience in 1979 and I find it to be just as great an experience and opportunity in 2009."
