Favorite Wang Chongyang from Shanxi tried to live up to expectations. The Asian record holder didn't start well, but managed to speed up later in the race. Wang completed the 4 laps in a time of 1 minute 3.032 seconds, shaving about two seconds off the Asian record he set at the 2009 national championship of track cycling.

Guo Jianbin represented Hebei. He raced to the silver medal with a time of 1 minute 3.340 seconds.

Lin Feng of Sichuan competed in the last three National Games, his effort fell short and he settled for bronze.

Wang's gold medal win could be a stepping-stone to more awards. It established him as the favorite at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.
