Despite Zhang's presence, Asian champion Wu Peng also sparkled in the Natatorium in Jinan. He stormed to an overwhelming victory in the men's 200m butterfly.

This is Wu's trademark event, and the defending champion surged blasted off to a great start. He just recovered from a fractured elbow he suffered during training early this year. His biggest challenger was Chen Yan in the 4th lane, right alongside Wu Peng.  Chen Yan was with the leaders, with Wu in third position during the first 150 meters. But Wu poured on the speed in the final 50 meters. He gradually narrowed the gap and finally passed all of his opponents to finish first.

The national record holder finished in a winning time of 1 minute, 54.40 seconds, over one second better than second-placed Chen Weiwu. Chen Yan was the third.

The win cheered Wu after an earlier upset in the 400m individual medley final which left him in fifth place.

Wu: He was obviously happy about the result, but he said after the competitions that he felt lots of pressure this time, as the country's top swimmers are competing the event. Wu also said that his next plan was to retain his title in the next year's Asian Games.
