Doha Asian Games champion Xue Fei was in contention for the women's 5,000m title. The 20-year-old Xue was joined in a neck and neck duel with Liaoning's Zhang Xin in the final lap, then went on to victory with a powerful spurt in the final 200 meters.

Xue Fei's main competitor, the Athens Olympic winner Xing Huina, pulled out of the 11th National Games due to a nagging injury. Xing's absence disappointed the host, but gave a chance to the Asiad winner.

Xue's winning time, 15 minutes 11.72 seconds, bettered her result 15:40.12 in 2006 Doha Asiad, and gave Jiangsu delegation an unexpected gold. Zhang Xin finished second in 15:13.30 and Zhu Yingying of Jiangsu third in 15:16.57.
