Yankees win World Series

2009-11-06 14:57 BJT

We start with baseball, and with the World Series at 3-2 in favor of the NY Yankees, it was up to Pedro Martinez on Wednesday night to make sure the Philadelphia Phillies gave themselves a lifeline to a deciding match.

But as usual it was this man Hideki Matsui who would give New York the early boost, a second inning two-run home run to right field giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead in Game 6.

Top of the 3rd inning, Jimmy Rollins hit a fly ball to right field off Andy Pettitte that Nick Swisher was able to track down. Swisher made the catch but Carlos Ruiz tagged up from third to make it a 2-1 game.

Shane Victorino raced to it and threw the ball to the infield but Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon both came around to score to put the Yankees ahead 4-1.

After Rodriguez walked, Matsui came to bat and sent both runners home. Durbin left a pitch out over the plate for the Japanese slugger and Matsui hammered it to right field. The ball fell just short of the wall and bounced over the Philadelphia outfielders to allow both runners to score. Matsui went eight for 13 at the plate during the series for New York.

Top of the 7th inning, Philadelphia had cut it to 7-3 when Chase Utley came to bat in the seventh with two runners on but Damaso Marte struck him out on a check swing.

Top of the 9th inning, Shane Victorino grounds out to end the game. The New York Yankees had won the World Series. They defeated the reigning champions 7-3 in the game and 4-2 in the series to secure the 27th title in franchise history but their first since 2000.

Hideki Matsui became the first Japanese-born player to be named World Series Most Valuable Player.
