McEnroe beats Cash

The ATP Champions tour has gotten underway in the Chinese city of Chengdu. The first day saw John McEnroe beat Pat Cash of Australia in straight sets in a match that was as colorful as you might expect.

Cash is somewhat renowned for his antics on the court, and would play up to the crowd in his own inimitable way to get them behind him. The Australian veteran even started discarding some of his apparel in a bid for their support.

At the other end, it was all business as usual for McEnroe. The man who became just as famous for his rants against dubious line calls as he was for his skill showed that old age hadn't mellowed him at all. But this tirade against one linesman obviously all in good fun.

Still, it seemed to focus McEnroe's mind as he raced to a comfortable lead in the first set which he would claim 6-4. Cash fought back in the second set to tie it at 6-all, but eventually, the American would win the tiebreaker and with it the match.

Enqvist defeats Chang 6-3, 6-2

Meanwhile, Michael Chang, a favorite of Chinese fans, didn't put on the best of performances and lost to Swede Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 6-2. The Swede is the current rankings leader among the senior tennis players.
