The Hannover 96 captain committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train on Wednesday. Fans brought mementos and lit candles in Enke's memory outside the team's AWD Arena. Dressed in black, Enke's tearful wife shed more light on her husband's condition.

Teresa Enke, widow of Robert Enke, said, "When he was depressed it always was a tough time. It is clear because he was missing motivation then as well and the hope for things to get better soon. He was worried about losing his sport and his private life as well."

Hannover 96 president Martin Kind said, "It absolutely surprised me. I got the message yesterday evening and I asked many many questions but didn't find any answers. I just saw how helpless we are in such situations. It just deeply shocked me."
