Peirsol: high tech swimming suit records should stand

American Olympic swimming champion Aaron Peirsol thinks new records should not be removed from the books when high-tech suits are banned next year.

Peirsol is getting ready for a FINA World Cup event in Singapore. The world record holder in the men's 100 and 200 metre backstroke told reporters on Thursday that any efforts to alter records set with high tech suits will only cause more confusion in the sport.

He also blames FINA for not keeping up with the pace of technology. FINA ruled next year's suits must have a maximum of 50 percent non-permeable material, eliminating polyurethane outfits.

Peirsol said he wished the rules were explained more fully during the height of the swimsuit controversy. But he does not expect the technology genie to remain in the bottle for long.

Aaron Peirol of world record holder says, "Going back to something like neoprene or polyurethane, it might not happenthat way. But there are other aspects of suits that will come back probably. And I think what people want to see at least, is at least just some guidelines as to what it was. I think the problem was that it was fairly loose. There was none. So anything goes, anything went."
