China's gold medal haul saw about one third of the 36 titles on offer go under its name at the East Asian Games at Hong Kong on Sunday. As a table tennis powerhouse, China defended its reputation as it beat Japan 3-1 to win the men's team title.

Beijing Olympics winning team member Wang Hao faced off with Jun Mizutani in the first round of the men's team final.

But the Olympic gold medalist was stunned by the Japanese, losing the opening match 3-0.

Wang's teammate Xu Xin clawed one point back for China. The rising star beat Seiya Kishikawa 3-0 on the second round.

Zhang Jike tipped the winning scale in China's favour as he defeated Kaii Yoshida 3-1 in the third match.

Then, the rising star Xu Xin secured the gold medal by beating Jun Mizutani 3-1 at the last round and the match goes to 3-1 over all.
