The Cup holders United went ahead after 17 minutes. City failed to deal with a cross from winger Antonio Valencia. Goalkeeper Shay Given blocked Wayne Rooney's shot, but Ryan Giggs followed up with a simple tap-in. United led 1-0.

Later, Tevez fed Craig Bellamy. Bellamy got pulled back by United's Rafael while entering the box.

Tevez wiped out United's early lead by smashing home the penalty in the 42nd minute.
