Wilson, Dredge lead opening of Qatar Masters

The 13th Qatar Masters is underway and Bradley Dredge and Oliver Wilson are tied at the top of the leaderboard on five-under following the opening round.

Gusts of up to 40 miles-per-hour made low scoring difficult and after his win at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Martin Kaymer carded a two-over-par 74 - with the wind causing him problems on the green

Alvaro Quiros began his title defence with a one-under-par 71. Birdies at the 15th and 16th gave the Spaniard a welcome boost.

His compatriot Sergio Garcia also struck four birdies in all. Garcia, though, managed a two-under-par 70 after making an early start to his round.

Having missed the cut last week in Abu Dhabi, European Tour Order of Merit winner Lee Westwood found some form. The Englishman rattled in five birdies - with one at each end of his 68-stroke round. Westwood's only bogey came at the par-four fifth.

This putt at the 12th brought Wilson one of his six birdies - a tally matched by Dredge.
