Turkey, Armenia to improve ties

Turkey has triumphed 2-nil over Armenia in a historic football match. Wednesday's contest had little significance in the world of sports, but packed a punch in the arena of international politics.

Armenian President Serge Sarkisian attended a dinner hosted by Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Bursa after arriving in Turkey to attend the World Cup qualifier.

The two leaders congratulated each other for taking bold steps toward reconciliation.

The two countries signed an agreement last weekend to establish diplomatic ties and open their border within two months.

The agreement, however, still needs to be approved by the parliaments of both countries.

The two nations have been at odds over the deep historical dispute regarding an alleged genocide against Armenians in the last days of the Ottoman Empire. The countries have agreed to set up a commission to re-examine the issue.
