Afghan president urges people to vote

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday attended a ceremony marking independence from Britain on the eve of the presidential election.

Karzai was joined by a number of senior military officers at Kabul's Independence Monument.

He faces some three dozen presidential candidates in the poll, including his former foreign minister and top challenger, Ab-dullah Ab-dullah.

Karzai's favored to win a second term. The president called for Afghans to go out and vote.

Hamid Karzai, Afghan President, said, "I hope that tomorrow our countrymen, millions of them will come out to vote for the country's stability, for the country's peace, for the country's progress. And they should come out and vote in great confidence and great hope for a better tomorrow."
