The EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, says that a timetable for renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks could be announced by late September.

Solana made the remarks during a visit to Jerusalem on Monday. He met separately with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and opposition party leader Tzipi Livni.

Solana says he believes that a proposal on reopening Mideast talks will come at the UN General Assembly on September 23rd. But he reiterates that Israel should freeze settlement projects in the West Bank.

Javier Solana, EU's foreign policy chief, said, "(It) has been said, very clearly said at all the levels of the European Union that freezing of settlements is a fundamental element to enter into a peace process, to recuperate the peace process, and to make the Arab countries accompany the process which I think is very important."
