A suicide bomber has killed the deputy chief of Afghanistan's National Directorate for Security, Dr. Abdullah Lagh-mani. The attack left 22 others dead, in a town east of Kabul.

Laghmani was killed while visiting a mosque to discuss reconstruction plans. The explosion ripped through a crowd just as officials were leaving the mosque.

Several provincial officials were also killed. The bombing underscored the Taliban's increasing ability to carry out targeted attacks against senior officials.
