British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is under fire from critics assailing his Afghanistan policy.

Polls suggest public opinion is increasingly against the conflict after about 50 British soldiers were killed there in the last four months. Brown says bringing peace to Afghanistan will make Britain a safer place.

Gordon Brown said, "It remains my judgment that a safer Britain requires a safer Afghanistan. In Afghanistan last week, I was further convinced that, despite the challenges we face, a nation emerging from three decades of violence can be healed and strengthened, and that our country, and the whole world, can be safer, because together we have the values, the strategy, and I believe the resolve, to complete the vital and important task."
