An attack in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has left 16 people dead, including six Italian soldiers. Dozens of other people were also wounded.

The Italian defense minister said the attack occurred on Thursday, when an explosive-filled car rammed into two other vehicles carrying 10 Italian soldiers. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility, saying in a text message that one of their militants carried out the suicide attack against NATO forces.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said 10 Afghan civilians were killed and 55 wounded. A minute's silence was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in memory of the victims of the blast.
