Many world leaders spoke at the opening session of the day-long event. They talked about their actions on global climate change.

Some industrialised countries also expressed their readiness to help developing countries cut emissions.

Climate-altering heat waves, droughts, melting glaciers, loss of the Greenland ice sheet and other calamities.

The Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change who shared the Nobel Peace Prize, Rajendra Pachauri warned the dangers are fast approaching.

Pachauri says major greenhouse gas cuts must be made by 2015 to avoid many of these dangers.

Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of IN Intergov's Panel on Climate Change, said, "My own analysis suggests at least 12 countries are likely to tend towards becoming failed states, and communities in several other states would show potential for serious conflicts due to scarcity of food, water and soil degradation."
