Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission, General Xu Caihou, has started a ten-day visit to the United States.
Xu Caihou is the highest ranking Chinese military official to visit the US in three years.
General Xu Caihou will meet several senior US officials, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates. He will also visit military facilities including the US Navy Academy and the Pacific Command.
The Taiwan issue and US arms sales to the island are expected to be high on the agenda during his talks with US officials.
Xu Caihou's US visit was scheduled for last year. But it was postponed in protest to the country's arms sales to Taiwan.
