With the country's unemployment rate close to 10 percent, job losses are being felt across the United States. People in West Virginia fear the economic downturn will threaten even small towns.

Ravenswood, West Virginia, is nestled along the banks of the Ohio River. It's a town of just four thousand.

For years Century Aluminum was the lifeblood of the community. But that changed in February. The plant shut down, eliminating some 650 jobs. The company blamed high costs and low prices.

It was a bitter day for the workers, some of whom had been at Century for years.

Robert Harvey, laid off century worker, said, " For me, we helped build them, and we were the ones that got shafted."

Former Century worker Chris Viers now gets by on unemployment benefit payments. He's returned to school with the help of a government program for workers who lose jobs.
