The Chinese characters, ".中国" could become the first top level global domain name, after China sent an application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN.

Very soon, Chinese Internet users will be able to type Internet addresses using Chinese characters. This will be a great step in globalizing the internet, by allowing non Latin scripts to be used in domain names.

The China Internet Network Information Center, or CNNIC, the country's domain name registration and management institution, says ICANN has received its application.

Qi Lin, assistant director of CNNIC, said, "CNNIC has been researching Chinese domain names since 1999. With ten years' experience of running technical support, we sent our official application to ICANN for ".中国"。If the application goes well, no sooner than March of next year, Chinese Internet users can visit Websites by typing Chinese characters in the browser's address bar."

Currently, internet domain names have been restricted to the Latin script, numbers, and connecting symbols, since they were created in the 1980s.

Qi Lin said, "For Chinese companies, they have to translate their brands from Chinese to English. And sometimes the English names are not corresponding to their original Chinese meaning. It makes it hard for Chinese Internet users to remember them. "

Experts say the introduction of Chinese domain names is one of the most significant reforms since the Internet first came online. There are about 320 million Internet users in the Chinese mainland and the majority of them don't recognize the Latin script. This plan will make the Internet more accessible than ever in China.
