Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Sweden for a summit on climate change and economic issues with the European Union.

Medvedev was greeted in Stockholm by Sweden's Deputy Prime Minister, Maud Olofsson. The Russian President will meet with European Union leaders on Wednesday. Both sides hope to lay the foundation for new economic and political cooperation on energy, trade, human rights, and climate change.

The EU, which represents nearly 500 million people, is Russia's biggest trading partner, accounting for about half of the country's overall trade turnover in the first nine months of this year.
