Supporters of ousted President, Manuel Zelaya, have echoed his opposition to the election. About 500 demonstrators clashed with riot policemen in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, on Sunday.

A local radio station initially reported that it began as a peaceful protest, but later turned violent. Riot police dispersed the crowd with tear gas. Demonstrators threw stones and broke windows, shouting demands for "freedom" and the restoration of Zelaya. Some protestors insisted they did not provoke the violent reaction, saying they were simply defending their rights.
