Britons celebrate New Year

As the clock strikes 8am in Beijing, the New Year is being cheerfully celebrated in the UK. In London, tens of thousands of people gathered along the River Thames, as 2009 wound down.

Local authorities fixed loud speakers to the Tower of Big Ben to amplify its chimes. As the bells rang in 2010, fireworks lit up the famous London skyline.
