Iran wants unconditional fuel swap

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for an unconditional deal to swap uranium fuel for Tehran's medical research reactor.

He rejected western claims that the country's nuclear program is geared towards making weapons.

On Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said Iran has offered an unconditional fuel deal to swap 20-percent enriched uranium with the US, Russia and France.

Under a draft deal brokered by the IAEA, most of Iran's existing low-grade enriched uranium would be shipped to Russia and France, where it would be processed into fuel rods with the purity of 20 percent.

The higher-level enriched uranium would then be transported back to Iran, who insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
