Israel's president has defended his country's decision to add two disputed shrines to a list of Jewish heritage sites. But, to Muslims, the shrines are Islamic. Palestinians view the Israeli move - a largely symbolic gesture - as a provocation.

The two disputed sites are Rachel's tomb in Bethlehem, and the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

Dozens of Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers in the west bank city of Hebron, in response to Israel's plan. The troops fired stun grenades towards Palestinians, throwing stones. Though no casualties were reported, tensions remain high.

Israeli President Shimon Peres met with the United Nations Mideast envoy, Robert Serry on Wednesday and defended his country's plan.
