Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has met with visiting China's top Taiwan Affairs official Wang Yi in Tokyo.

During the meeting on Friday, both sides exchanged ideas over the Taiwan issue. Hatoyama said Japan would continue to abide by the principles set out in bilateral documents, including the China-Japan Joint Statement. He said Japan does not support the seeking of Taiwan independence. He pointed out that improving cross-strait ties were beneficial to regional peace and stability.

Wang said the Taiwan issue was of core interest to China. It should be solved by Chinese on both sides of the Strait.

Wang hopes the Japanese government will improve mutual trust between China and Japan, by backing the "one-China policy", and dealing with the Taiwan issue with caution.
