Nine workers have been rescued from the flooded Wangjialing mine in north China's Shanxi Province. They are currently in hospital receiving treatment.

The rescue of the nine workers was a dramatic turnaround after search teams worked around the clock for more than a week.

Thousands of onlookers stood late at night along the road, waiting to applaud the ambulances, carrying the survivors.

144 other workers remain trapped in the flooded Wangjialing mine shaft. Rescue workers say they heard banging on metal pipes, indicating further signs of life.
