Millions of Sudanese are gearing up for a presidential election, the first time in 24 years. They will also be electing a southern president, state governors and members for national and local assemblies.

Sudan's National Elections Commission, the NEC, reiterated on Saturday its commitment to organizing a free, credible and transparent election. The UN has provided technical assistance and limited logistical support to the NEC. But worries remain as some opposition parties reportedly have threatened to boycott the poll. The potential for violence has also prompted large numbers of citizens to leave the capital, Khartoum.
