With sport rapidly improving in the country, Chinese universities are now getting in on the act and developing special centers to boost the growth.

China sports has entered a new era as the country has enjoyed a boom in the industry thanks to special guidelines issued by the State Council in 2014 that aimed to make improvements. The country’s universities are also showing support by making themselves available as special research centers.

“Now schools like Tsinghua university, Peking university, Shanghai University of Sport and Capital University of Physical Education and Sports have all established their research center of a certain field in the sports industry. These are the pioneers, but I think we will need more universities to join them in the future,” said Feng Jianzhong, general administration of sport vice director.

With a growing market also comes problems. One of them being a shortage of professional talent.

“Talent shortage is very crucial because when you want to develop the sports industry, you always come across people that lack an understanding of sports, business, consumption and also the ability market. We are very short on these kind of people,” said Li Ning, Sports Industry Committee director.

“Tsinghua will corporate with foreign universities to train professional management staff for International Sport events. For example, the upcoming Winter Olympics. Secondly, we will provide training to those who want to be qualified for certain kinds of activity such as coaching and being an agent. We are also hoping to establish a special kind of certification for these people,” said Yang Bin, Tsinghua University vice president.

With great ambition, Tsinghua officially unveiled its sports industry development center and hired the services of Winter Olympic gold medalist and IOC committee member Yang Yang as its sports specialty director, along with former Chinese Gymnast Li Ning, who will work as sports industry director. But for the “Gymnastic Prince,” the center still has a long way to go.

“I think our research can benefit from market practice. We should know the current situation and the potential future of the industry. We should learn from developed countries and how they have developed their sports industry. Our research would range from investment, sport management, the sport itself, and consumer habits. Only through that can we provide better support to the athletes, investors and also the government,” Li said.

China’s sports industry may still in its early stages compared to countries such as the U.S and Japan, where sport has become a pillar of their society. But with effort, many are confident of further boom in the near future.
