In the Copa America, Uruguay was in a must-win against Venezuela. The 15-time champs lost their opening Group C encounter to Mexico, and needed a victory, or else they would be eliminated in the group phase for the first time since 1997.

Playing without Luis Suarez because of a hamstring injury, the Uruguayans come close off a free-kick in the 31st minute, but Edison Cavani cannot get a foot on this cross.

The Venezuelans would catch their opponents napping -- midfielder Alejandro Guerra tries to lob Fernando Muslera from more than 30 metres. The Uruguay keeper manages to tip the ball onto the bar, but Salamon Rondon taps in the rebound in the 36th minute. The ball landing perfectly for the forward, who bounces it over the goalie to make it 1-nil.

Venezuela almost make it 2-nil with a counter-attack in the 68th minute, but Adalberto Penaranda's low shot is smothered by Muslera.

Into stoppage time now, and the Uruguayans desperately seeking an equalizer, but Cavani cannot fire it past the keeper. The Venezuelans hold on for a 1-nil win, their first over Uruguay at the Copa, and eliminate their foes.

El Tri advance after picking up second win of Group Stage

Mexico would be playing Jamaica, and the many El Tri supporters are given something to cheer about in the 18th minute, as Javier Hernandez heads it home for a 1-0 advantage. It's Chicharito's 45th career goal for his national team.

The Jamaicans press for an equalizer, but Garath McCleary's shot is blocked by Mexican defender Yasser Corona. It remains 1-nil.

El Tri double their lead on a goal in the 81st minute, as Oribe Peralta beats the keeper inside the far post for his 22nd international goal. Mexico come away with a 2-0 victory.

So after Thursday's results, Mexico advance from the group, along with surprising Venezuela. The two will meet Monday in Houston to determine first place. Uruguay together with Jamaica are heading home.
