The Scandinavians have been led by their practicing dentist co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who described his team as ‘Iceland’s Army’ and declared the victory against Roy Hodgson’s side a potentially ‘life-changing’ moment.

No wonder the country's FA wants him to take sole charge at the end of the tournament, and he does not return to his dental practice.

Iceland had never come close to reaching a major tournament before Hallgrimsson and Lars Lagerback took over the reins, and no one really expected them to -- mostly due to their small population.

There certainly have been no other dentists patrolling the touchline at the Euros in the past, and it seems less likely in the future.

But in Iceland, the idea of having two professions is not uncommon. Towards the end of his career Lee Sharpe had a spell playing for Grindavik, and he would wait for his team-mates to come off their fishing boats before joining them for training.

Iceland’s goalkeeper at the tournament, Hannes Halldorsson, only turned professional three years ago after establishing himself as a successful film director who provided the video for the nation’s Eurovision Song Contest entry in 2012.
