South African paralympic gold medallist, Oscar Pistorius, is set to be sentenced later today for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The 29-year-old had originally been found guilty of culpable homicide and was placed under house arrest in October after serving 1 year of a 5-year sentence in prison.
A subsequent appeal was lodged by the Steenkamp's family, and the athlete was found guilty of murder in December and now faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars. A final plea for leniency was made by his lawyer that claimed his physical disability and mental state should be considered during the sentencing process. Known as the 'Blade Runner' during his competing days, Pistorius enjoyed a successful athletic career having won 6 Paralmpic gold medals between 2004 and 2012.
