Chinese Premier Li Keqaing is set to travel to Mongolia this week. He's due to travel to Mongolia for a visit from Wednesday to Saturday.

Kong Xuanyou with the Chinese Foreign Ministry says the timing of the visit is a sign of the importance China attaches to its ties with Mongolia.

"Premier Li Keqiang will be the first foreign leader to visit Mongolia since the country elected its new parliament and formed its new government. The new Mongolian government, as its past administrations, places great importance on its relationship with China. China is willing to work with the new Mongolian government to use this opportunity to boost bilateral ties."

A number of deals are expected to be signed during Li Keqiang's visit, in areas including energy, infrastructure and animal husbandry.

Li Keqiang will also attend a leaders' summit of the annual Asia-Europe Meeting in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar.
