A number of Chinese companies are among the suppliers that have provided needed hardware for the Rio Olympics. That includes air conditioning manufacturer Gree. The company has been in Brazil for more than 15 years and provided the crucial cooling for the Olympic villages.

Gree became one of the Rio Olympics' official suppliers for air conditioner due to its high quality. But installation proved to be a big challenge as construction delays shortened their schedule. Xie Dongbo is a manager who has worked in Brazil for seven years.

"We needed to install so many air conditioners in the Olympic stadiums, but our work had to be pushed back due to delays in constructions. So we've met huge difficulties when trying to compete installation before the deadline," Xie said.

Gree Chairman Dong Mingzhu said she values the long-term potential of the Brazilian market.

"Brazil has long day-time, and it can be very hot. So air conditioners should save energy. Our products are really strong. That's why many consumers gradually shift to use Gree's air conditioners. We think less for ourselves, and more for the benefit we can bring to our customers," Dong said.

Market demand for air conditioners in Brazil was halved to an estimated 2 million units this year from last year's 4 million. That's because Brazil's economy was hard hit by weak oil and commodities prices. Still, Gree says the positive story is that it has established strong service and cultural bonding in Brazil and that's key to future success.
