China's Ding Junhui would face Scott Donaldson in the first round Monday. The local favorite looking to keep his momentum going after success at the Six-red World Championship in Bangkok earlier in the month. But the Chinese potter would be pushed by the world number 114.

Ding would struggle on day one of the tenth anniversary Shanghai Masters.

Missing badly on this easy black.

Donaldson would take advantage of his poor play to move 3-1 in front. Ding is off the target again in the fifth frame.

The world number nine, finally puts some solid play together, and levels at three frames each.

Donaldson took the seventh frame to go ahead, but the former World No.1 is able to force a decider.

It was Donaldson who had the frame in his grasp with just two reds left. However, he missed a simple black.

That allows Ding to ruthlessly clear and complete a comeback win to reach the second round.

"I didn't play well today. I wanted to perform better, but I haven't trained much after the event in Thailand. Maybe only two days. So my preparation was not good enough," Ding Junhui said.

Also on Monday, Yuan Sijun would cause a major shock against Martin Gould. The 16-year-old making short work of the veteran in a qualifying match.

The Englishman left shaking his head after a 5-0 defeat. It’s the second time Gould has been on the end of a whitewash against the Chinese teenager, who beat him by the same score at this year’s China Open. Yuan made breaks of 111, 65 and 48 on his way to the win. His reward is a clash in the last 32 with World Champion Mark Selby.

Meanwhile, Liang Wenbo proved to be too strong for wildcard Hu Hao. The World number 19 made breaks of 80, 76 and 44 as he came away a 5-3 winner. Next up for him is five-time World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.

John Higgins also struggled in the beginning of his showdown with Matthew Selt. But the four-time Crucible winner came back from 3-1 down, to overcome Selt 5-3 and advances.
