On the ice, Brad Marchand etched his name in Canadian hockey lore with the like of Paul Henderson, and Mario Lemieux. The forward rescuing the red-and-white against Europe in the World Cup of Hockey.

The continental squad was leading the hosts of the tournament, late into the game, trying to force a deciding game three of the championship final, until Canada got a late marker, setting up Marchand's heroics.

In the opening period, the upstart Euros get the opening goal, as Zdeno Chara beats Carey Price top shelf. 1-zip continentals.

Canada would be snake-bitten and could not beat Jaroslav Halak, John Tavares firing it off the post with an open net.

Europe would take that 1-nothing lead late into the third -- but the hosts finally get on the board -- Brent Burns point shot on a powerplays goes in. Patrice Bergeron deflecting it 1-1 game with three-minutes to go.

Europe get a powerplay of their own, and nearly take the lead, but Roman Josi hits the iron. It remains 1-1.

On that same powerplay, the Canadians breakout -- Jonathan Toews making moves and dropping it for Brad Marchand who wires it off the post and in. His goal coming with 44 seconds left, and he makes the full house audience to go into crazy, as does the Canadian bench.

Team Canada hold on for a 2-1 win, and take the final two games to nothing, Sidney Crsoby, the captain of the winning side, earned MVP honours of the tournament and receives the trophy that doubles as a giant vase, or vase.
