China has slammed the US for sailing a warship around South China Sea islands in the region, saying the move was a "serious illegal act" and "deliberately provocative". The Defense Ministry said two Chinese naval vessels warned off a US ship after it entered the waters of Xisha Island.

The Foreign Ministry called the action one that "seriously violated China's sovereignty and security interests, and had seriously broken relevant Chinese law and international law."

The Chinese military vowed to beef up patrols in the area accordingly. The White House confirmed the sailing, but denied Chinese claims that it was a "provocation".

The US action comes after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte wrapped up a four-day state visit to China. The Chinese and Philippine leaders pledged to resume talks over their own territorial dispute in the South China Sea.
