An overview of CSL 2016

For the just concluded Chinese Super League season -- 12 years are now in the books, this campaign had some similarity to previous ones, but also some differences.

The winners of the league, are the same as the pervious five as Guangzhou Evergrande lifted the CSL title for the sixth straight year. In the league's 12-year existance, Evergrande have been champions exactly half of the time.

The league definitely is more affluent than in years past -- check out some of these staggering figures -- Hulk was brought in from Zenti St. Petersburg to SIPG for an Asian record fee of 55-million euros. Jiangsu Suning was a big spender in the transfer window shelling out 113-million euros on players. Hebei Fortune and SIPG were also throwing cash around, spending more than 70-million euros each to attract new talent.

On the pitch Ricardo Goulart led the circuit, potting 19 goals and managing 8 assists. Wu Lei was the top Chinese performer -- thanks to his 14 goals and 9 assists. Several players managed to find the net 14 times, including Senegalese striker Demba Ba, who broke his leg mid-season. Guangzhou Evergrande's Gao Lin was the top playmaker, leading the league with 12 assists, he also scored seven times.

Looking ahead to next season -- Evergrande and Jiangsi Suning earned AFC Champions League spots. SIPG and Shanghai Shenhua need to go through qualifying. A couple new teams are in the circuit, as Tianjin Quanjian and Guizhou Zhicheng have been promoted from League One, while Hangzhou Greentown and Shijiazhuang Ever-bright have been relegated.
