The Chinese government has released its first Five-Year Plan targeted at alleviating poverty in the country. It includes eight measures to tackle the issue such as industrial development, employment transfer and social welfare.

The plan focuses on developing border regions, areas with ethnic populations and clusters of poor areas. Forestry, tourism and e-commerce are also on the agenda to increase agricultural income and diversify local economies.

Last year, President Xi Jinping pledged to eradicate poverty on the Chinese mainland by 2020 and improve the living standards of nearly 56 million people under the poverty line.
