In face of the COVID-19 epidemic, members and cadres of the Communist Party of China (CPC) have acted swiftly and bravely in controlling the disease.

As the vanguard of the Chinese people, the CPC sees serving the people wholeheartedly as its fundamental purpose. It's the CPC's nature that propels Party members to charge forward at critical moments.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called on Party members to give full play to their exemplary and vanguard role and step forward and fight bravely at critical moments.

On Dec. 29, 2019, some patients with pneumonia of unknown cause were transferred to Zhang's hospital. The cause of the pneumonia was later identified as the novel coronavirus.

In the following more than 30 days when Zhang worked around the clock to fight the disease, he often went to bed at about 2 a.m. and got up at about 4 a.m., answering numerous phone calls and handling a stream of emergencies.

However, it was less known that the doctor himself was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2018. "My legs had been gradually rendered powerless. So I have to compete against time to get more patients back from the epidemic," he said.

"As a Party member and a medical worker, I have to stay true to my original aspiration and shoulder my due responsibility at such a critical moment," Zhang added.

Racing against time to save more patients, Zhang couldn't even find time to take care of his wife, who was under treatment in another hospital after she was diagnosed with COVID-19.

In China, there are millions of Party members contributing their efforts to the fight against COVID-19. Working in cities and villages to spread anti-epidemic awareness and help the people fight the disease, they worked hard to dispel panic for the people and their efforts have won people's recognition.
