Between 460 and 465 C.E., a monk named Tanyao, along with 10,000 craftsmen, carved the first five caves into a one-kilometer ridge at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain in Datong, Shanxi Province, hence the birth of the Yungang Grottoes.
